August 2023—Dyersville

Some might say the Iowa countryside is boring, so much corn… but to me, rolling fields spotted with farms is a beautiful Midwest site to experience. Plus, if you know me, you know I am a huge baseball fan (can you hear the sarcasm?). So, since we are in Dyersville, IA for Amy’s business trip, we might as well go see the “Field of Dreams.” It was definitely smaller than I expected and yes, the corn is right there. There were other people visiting like us and some were playing catch and fielding some balls.

Field of Dreams is a baseball field in the middle of farm country and pop-culture tourist attraction build for the 1989 movie of the same name.

Some other fun things to see and do while you’re in Dyersville are the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier Church; it was named in honor of the missionary Saint Francis Xavier. It was raised to the status of a minor basilica in 1956. Then there is the Textile Brewing Company, the building was built in 1908 as a Gasoline Engine Factory and then it turned into a sewing factory from 1910-2017. The brewing company repurposed almost everything they found in the historical building and turned the items into tables and seating for the new brewery. We highly recommend having a jumbo pretzel if you visit. We ordered Garlic Parmesan and it was as big as the platter it was served on!

Let’s not forget the Farm Toy Museum, which we didn’t have time to see and the Doll Museum in an old Victorian house… Unfortunately, they were closed. Oh well, we thought it might be kind of creepy with all those eyes following us!

Well that’s all we had time to do, until next time… I look forward to seeing more corn.
