San Antonio, TX
February 2023: Amy and I decided to go for a quick Valentines weekend get-away to San Antonio, TX in February. We stayed Sunday through Wednesday at the Drury Inn and Suites in downtown San Antonio, located on the River Walk. The River Walk is a quaint destination, which was very fun and the history of San Antonio was fascinating. The Drury Inn and Suites was a very nice place to stay and centrally located right on the River Walk.

Another fun addition to our stay was the hotel has a happy hour every night for their guests, up to 3 drinks free. Along with that they serve Texas sized appetizers, which really means almost a full meal. It’s not fine dining but was a great option if you are on a budget.

Sunday: We walked the River Walk, which was right out the door of our hotel and had some delicious appetizers at the Iron Cactus, highly recommend the table side guacamole, it was a very good Mexican restaurant. Then we took the Go Rio boat cruise on the river. We had a great driver who knew lots of history and made it a fun experience. When walking to the boat cruise, we got suckered in to a timeshare presentation for Monday because they were going to give us lots of free gifts. We love thinking we got a good deal.

So now it’s Monday: Did the Wyndham timeshare tour, why do we let these things happen to us? Don’t worry we are not new owners of a timeshare. But we got free stuff. Anyway, after that we started our day. Walked to the San Fernando Cathedral. It was cool, not as big as we

expected, there was a Spanish mass going on so we couldn’t walk around. There was a Pieta statue in the front of church that look beautiful from the distance. There is a plaque at San Fernando Cathedral, San Antonio: “The remains of the Alamo heroes are entombed in the Chapel at the left-hand side of the entrance to this Cathedral.” Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie buried within. Wow that’s interesting. Got on the Hop On Hop Off bus tour (very difficult to figure out where the buses stop, the stops are not very well marked. It turns out that if you pick up the bus at the
beginning it’s not as difficult as we made it out to be.) We road the bus to the Historic Market Square, lots of shops and a historic Mexican restaurant, Mi Terra, 140 years old. Many beautiful Mexican/western/leather style shops. Weekends they have live music and a farmers market. We realize we did not have enough time to take the bus so decided on an Uber to our 4:00 pm reservation at Chart house on top of the Tower of the Americas. Wow, what a view. The tower is 750 feet tall (everything is bigger in Texas) it was built in 1968 for the worlds fair. There is a window in the elevator on the way up… I had to close my eyes and lean on Amy on the way up. But once we got to the top the views were amazing and the food was fantastic. The Chart House is known for their seafood and they didn’t disappoint. The restaurant rotates around the top and does a complete rotation in about 40 minutes… it was a little freaky but fun to see the surroundings. Also had probably the best chocolate bourbon cocktail ever. We got back to the hotel and went to bed early, we were exhausted.
Tuesday: Today is Valentines Day, the day for love-az. Our plan for today is to hop on the bus “near the palm trees across from the Buckhorn Museum,” that was the instructions we got when we called the tour company because the stop nearest to our hotel was under construction, anyway we road it around to the south side of the city to get to the Alamo, wait…Change of plans we decided to walk to the Alamo, it is sunny and warm out today, 80 degrees. It turns out we were only about 3-4 blocks away from the Alamo the whole time. We purchased the audio tour at the Alamo and it was very good and full of history. The Alamo is small but quite impressive. After that we hopped on the bus and got off in the Pearl district. Oh my gosh, this is a really cool hipster area of restaurants and shops. Wish we had more time to explore. We ate a quick lunch at Botika, a Peruvian Asian inspired restaurant. We enjoyed empanadas and salmon 3-way sushi roll. Then at the last minute we decided to order the Kim Chi and rice, spicy goodness, delicious! The server also invited us back for Salsa dance lessons in the evening. Sounds fun! We will have to see if our feet can take it.

We made our way back to the bus and headed around the city to hear about the rest of the sites. Got off at the Alamo and meandered our way to our dinner reservations at Boudors Texas Bistro on the River Walk and were seated right on the river edge. Literally, if we moved our chairs too much we would have had an unwanted bath. We had the best guacamole ever highly recommend it! It was made from scratch at our table. Finished our fabulous meal, nobody fell in the river, and we walked the river walk back to our hotel for a short rest.

One of our free gifts were tickets to Howl At The Moon dueling piano bar! Oh my gosh what fun! We were sitting at a table in the back and they said it would fill up in there and it sure did. We didn’t think it would matter too much because we weren’t going to stay very long due to an early flight. We ended up staying longer than we thought but it was so fun, and the party was just getting started. Time to go.
Wednesday: Time to head home. Got up early-ish and headed to airport. Nothing crazy to note here, it was an easy and uneventful trip home.
